Protection From Debt Consolidation Scams – Information Is The Key Factor

In this struggling economy, many people are suffering from huge debts caused by a job loss, foreclosure, or other unfortunate circumstances. Most people flock to debt consolidation companies to get help in managing their debts and finances. While there are hundreds of genuine companies out there in the market, but unscrupulous companies also have a strong presence - they are almost equal in number. Thus, in order to avoid debt consolidation scams, it is very important for you to know how to differentiate between genuine and fake companies. Unawareness is the main reason why the number of victims who fell into the financial trap created by those fake companies is growing rapidly. Because of the lack of information, they end up decimating their credit report and hurting their bank account.

Is A Non-Profit Company The Best Choice For You?

When you are shopping for the best debt management company, you may have the temptation to go for the one that claims to be a non-profit organization. It makes you think that a non-profit company cannot be a scam and they wont charge you anything and that they are working for the welfare of the community - for people like you. It is not always true. In most cases, adding the word non-profit to a company's profile is only an attempt for tax claim. They may also be engaged in debt consolidation scams. Therefore, you must do an unbiased research while you are looking out for the best company. The word non-profit should mean nothing to you.

Know The System That A Company Follows

When a company claims that they can help you consolidate and pay off your debts fast, the first thing you should ask them is the system they follow. How they are going to do this? How does the system work? Does it sound convincing? How much will it cost you? Can you cancel at any time? Will the cancellation result in some penalties, how much? Get all these details in writing.

How Will They Negotiate Down Your Debts?

Companies involved in debt consolidation scams will make highly alluring claims that they will get your debts reduced to a very low amount through expert negotiations with your lenders. Always remember, very few companies are able to do that. In such cases, the best way to avoid scams is to ask them to charge you a contingent fee for their service. It means you will be paying them the fee only after they reduce your debts. A genuine company will not ask you to make the payments in advance. Again, get everything in writing. Check that the creditors have duly signed the renegotiated agreement.

Companies involved in debt consolidation scams may ask you to authorize them to make the payments on your behalf to collection agencies. Don't do that. A genuine company deals directly with the creditors, eliminating the role of the collection agencies. And, in any case, making the payments to collection agencies through a debt consolidation company will not improve your credit score even if you are making the payments in time.
