Online Credit Card Application - How Safe Is It?

Most people are wary about online credit card applications, and it is no surprise.  Sadly, the Internet does not have a glowing testament of honesty and security.  Hackers in the past have been known to break into the privacy of people’s homes through the cyber-window offered by a connected computer.  Of more concern though, is the ever present threat of fraud.  Credit card fraud is one of the most common amoral acts that can be found on the lounges of cyber space.

However, despite all this, it is not impossible to apply for a credit card online.  In fact, contrary to popular opinion, applying for a credit card online is safe, just as long as you visit the right provider webpage.  It’s a common mistake made by people.  You should only submit your details when you are sure that you are on the correct page of your preferred financial institution.  The reason is obvious.  While other sites offering online application services might be sincere, sites hosted by banking institutions are protected with the latest and most efficient forms of Internet security.

Today banks don’t just transmit credit details between servers.  It is done using a transmission protocol called the Secure Sockets Layer.  This technology is used to encrypt your banking information during transmissions.  Perhaps you’ve read of encryption messaging used in the Second World War by spies.  Well, this is something similar to that,
Except that it is a lot harder — nigh impossible to break.

Online Banking Encryption

Here, then, is how it works.  On completion of your online credit card form, the server immediately encrypts your information for transmission.  How this encryption process goes is really not important.  (Do a two key and a 128 bit encryption mean anything to you?)  What is important is how efficient the procedure is.  Computer hackers never use the word unbreakable when they talk about encrypted codes.  However, they do discuss the length of time code breaking will take, and this is the good news.  If a hacker managed the extremely difficult act of stealing your encrypted information, and he had the world’s fastest computer in one of those basements that hackers always seem to have, it would take him an impressive 20,000 years before he would be able to break the code.

That’s Good News Isn’t It?

For you that is.  For the hacker it’s just plain bad news.
In the end, the chief risk of online credit card applications lies in the decisions you make.   If you submit your information on a false webpage, then you are open to attack.  Take time to ensure that you are on a secure page before you begin filling out a form.  If you have problems finding the official web page you need, you can seek assistance from websites that provide this feature.  Credit card fraud exists every now and then.  But, it can never be found on the secure pages of a credible bank’s online form.
