Lion Air Places Record Order Of 230 Boeing 737s Worth USD22.4 Billion
February 14, 2012

New York, February 14 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - Indonesian budget carrier, PT Lion Mentari Airlines, has placed an order of 230 Boeing 737 airplanes worth $22.4 billion at list prices. The order has set a record for the plane maker and comprises 201 in-development 737 Max and 29 extended range 737-900s. The order also gives the purchaser a leeway to buy an additional 150 aircraft. Lion Air gets the distinction of being the first customer to launch the 737 Max 9.

The order is also a record for Chicago-based Boeing with respect to the number of planes and the total value. The plane maker is now making firm agreements for the 737 MAX in place of its earlier commitments. Lion Air’s order for the new fuel-efficient variant of Boeing’s best-selling aircraft surpasses Southwest Airlines’ order of 208 737s and Norwegian Air Shuttle’s order for 122 737s.

Lion Air, a Jakarta-based company, was expected to carry 27 million passengers last year, which was 30 percent higher than before. It has forecast a future growth of about 15 percent a year. As per Boeing’s plans, the 737 MAX aircraft is expected to enter service in 2017. Compared to current single-aisle planes, it will pare fuel use and carbon emissions by almost 12 percent. Boeing will use engines made by CFM International Inc., a joint venture of General Electric Co. and Safran SA for the 737 MAX.
