Delta (OYC) Hub In New York To Phase Out Turboprops
February 14, 2012

New York, February 14 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - As Delta Air Lines Inc. (OYC) is building a domestic hub at LaGuardia Airport, New York might see smaller passenger planes fading away. Delta is focusing more on larger jets instead of turboprops to fill the gap that will be created by US Airways Group Inc.'s (NYSE: LCC) pulling back from New York by paring commuter flights to upstate cities, such as Albany and Syracuse.

Planes that were used extensively by carriers serving sparsely populated markets and carrying only a few fliers are now considered too costly due to rising fuel cost. Jets are considered better airplanes as they are more comfortable, more reliable, cleaner and quieter.
By July, Delta will have expanded its daily LaGuardia departures by 75 percent to 264, as it will be using its landing rights from a trade with US Airways. It will eventually become the world’s second-biggest airline to control 50 percent of all LaGuardia flights. More than 75 percent of the flights will be on jets with at least 70 seats. These planes will have a business-class cabin, a few rows of coach seats with extra legroom, and a Wi-Fi. An airline analyst said that corporate travelers will have the satisfaction of being able to go to New York on an all-jet service mainly due to Delta’s offering.
