Drivers to Bear Brunt of ODOT Funding Crisis
January 23, 2012

New York, January 23 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - As Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is facing severe funding crisis, it has come with a conclusion that it will have to cringe costs, resulting in the delay of various road projects. Hundreds of millions of dollars that had been allocated to local projects, including the Innerbelt expansion, are being withheld plaguing transportation officials and worried drivers, who will have to foot the bill by wasting more time and gas and by facing perilous driving conditions.

ODOT officials recommended this week that dozens of projects should be delayed, some by even 11 years or more. However, even if such a step might save millions of dollars in the short term, ultimately the project costs will go through the roof because the estimates are based on today’s rates and are cheaper, as at present the construction demand is low.

The current crisis will have future financial ramifications if the delays are approved this spring. ODOT said that it will urge lawmakers to find alternate sources of funding in order to move forward. ODOT director Jerry Wray said that Ohio will continue with road maintenance with the $100 million that it can afford at the moment.
