FDA Does Not Favor Recall of Orange Juice

New York, January 21 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday that it has not found any measurable amounts of banned fungicide tied to oranges from Brazil. The regulator responded on the complaint of Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) that said it had found traces of the fungicide carbendazim in samples of orange juice brands, such as Maid and Simply Orange.

The Environmental Protection Agency said that the use of carbendazim in oranges is banned in the US, although it is used on a number of crops in many countries. Coke said that the samples found tainted in its own testing were from Brazil, where cabendazim is used to combat a mold that grows on orange trees.

In its testing, the FDA found that 19 out of the 45 imported samples tested did not contain measurable amounts of carbendazim. The samples were from five countries excluding Brazil. EPA said that a recall is not justified because in its preliminary risk assessment, levels of carbendazim reported by Coke were not up to
