Genwall Resources To Pay USD500,000 Fine Over Fatal 2007 Mine Collapse

New York, March 10 (FinanceEnquiry.com) – Genwall Resources Inc, the corporate owner of a coal mine at Crandall Canyon, has agreed to pay a fine of $500,000 as settlement of criminal charges in connection with a 2007 collapse of the mine, where six workers and three rescuers died. Attorneys said on Friday that the settlement was reached the same day US prosecutors filed the criminal case.

Six workers were trapped 1,800 feet underground when the Utah mine collapsed in August 2007. Seismic waves with an intensity of 3.9 were created by the power of the cave-in. Three rescue workers were killed in a second collapse ten days later. Further efforts to look for the miners were called off by officials and there was no further news about the trapped miners. However, the bodies of the three rescuers were recovered.

The charges leveled against Genwall in the criminal case were that the company had failed to make a timely report to the mine Safety and Health Administration about a bounce or burst of coal that had taken place in March 2007, just five months before the fatal collapse. A second count of the criminal charges against Genwall alleged that the company mined in a prohibited area just days before the collapse.
