McDonalds (MCD) Discontinues Use Of Ammonia Treated Beef In Hamburgers
February 2, 2012

New York, February 2 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been campaigning for ceasing the use of technically discarded beef cuts treated with ammonium hydroxide. McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD), the world’s leading fast food chain, has announced that it is no longer using ammonia-treated beef in its hamburger products. However, the company denied that it was influenced by Jamie’s campaign in taking this decision. The company also said that the product has been out of its supply chain since August 2011.

Oliver has been campaigning to stop the use of what he calls “pink slime” in school cafeterias and fast food chains in the US. He has been demonstrating in his television show “Food Revolution” that the key ingredient in the process of making the “pink slime” is ammonia. The US Department of Agriculture has approved the use of ammonia-treated beef saying that it is “generally recognized as safe.” Oliver says that 70 percent of US beef contains “pink slime.” He suggests that the best solution would be to use ground beef and watch the butcher grind it.
