February 15, 2012

New York, February 15 (FinanceEnquiry.com) - According to reports released Tuesday, US air carriers achieved all-time lows in the number of mishandled bags and cases of bumping passengers in 2011. Moreover, it has been revealed by trade group, Airlines for America, that in the category of mishandled bags in 2011, it was the best performance by airlines since data about luggage began to be collected by the Department of Transportation in 1988. In 2011, the number of reports of mishandled bags was 3.30 per 1,000 passengers, whereas in 2010 it was 3.51.

Airlines for America said that a record low was also reached in the rate of bumped passengers since the department started collecting data in 1995. It dropped to 0.81 per 10,000 passengers in 2011, against 1.09 in 2010. However, although the rate of complaints per 100,000 passengers went down slightly from 2010, the number of consumer complaints against U.S. carriers remained the same at 7,465 per 100,000 passengers. On-time performance year-over-year hovered around 80 percent.

The agency reported that since it started collecting comparable data in 1995, December achieved the best on-time record (84 percent) and lowest flight cancellation rate (0.8 percent) for the month. In December 2010, only 72 percent of flights arrived on time and 3.7 percent of flights were cancelled. The on-time record of the fourth-quarter of 2011 was the best of any fourth-quarter.
